Imphal: JNIMS has so far conducted
28 transplants of kidneys from
living donor and the number of
kidney transplant from a deceased
or brain death patient is
two, said L. Deben Singh, Director
of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute
of Medical Sciences (JNIMS),
Imphal in a press meet held at
his office.
Yesterday, a brain death individual
from Kongpal Kshetri
Leikai identified as K. Roben
Kumar donated his kidney, one
to JNIMS and another to Shija
Hospital, making him the second
brain death donor.
The first ever organ donation
from a deceased person was
donated by one Sarungbam
Kennedy Singh, from
Chingamathak Nameirakpam
Leikai. Within six hours of being
declared brain dead, one of
Kennedy’s kidneys was donated
to JNIMS and the other to
Shija Hospital.
As a result, two patients with
end-stage kidney disease received
kidney transplants, providing
them with a new lease on
life, stated Prof Laishram Deben
Singh, Director of JNIMS.
