Imphal: The iconic bodybuilder, affectionately known as the ‘Son of Manipur,’ and a recipient of the Mr. India and Mr. Universe titles, has left a void as he passed away at the age of 88. Mr. Maipak, a beacon of inspiration for aspiring bodybuilders, breathed his last during medical treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Science yesterday evening.
Born on June 12, 1935, in Uripok Sorbon Thingel Sinam Leikai, Imphal West district, Mr. Maipak made an indelible mark on the national and international bodybuilding scene. His victory in the Mr. India competition in 1970 and subsequent representation of India at the 1971 Mr. Universe competition in Paris, where he secured the 10th position, showcased his extraordinary talents. Beyond bodybuilding, he excelled as an athlete, breaking the national record in hammer throw at the 1958 Delhi national games, proudly representing Manipur.
Survived by his wife, four sons, and three daughters, Mr. Maipak’s legacy extends beyond the realms of bodybuilding and athletics. Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed heartfelt condolences and paid tribute during the final rites. CM Singh remarked, “My sincere condolences on the loss of Nongthombam Maipak, the Son of Manipur. His accomplishments as Mr. India 1970 and as a participant in Mr. Universe 1971 brought pride to our state, leaving an everlasting impact. May his legacy continue to inspire future generations, and may his soul rest in eternal peace.” In addition to his bodybuilding achievements, Maipak made a name for himself as a hammer throw, shot put, and discus throw athlete in the 1958 Delhi national games, breaking national records.
