Imphal: In a significant stride towards environmental preservation and cultural significance, the removal of phumdies at Thanga Chinglak has commenced after a six-year hiatus. This collaborative effort involves local fishermen, marking a crucial step in maintaining the hydrological balance of Loktak Lake.

Thanga Chinglak, an integral channel for Loktak Lake, holds paramount importance in both ecological and cultural aspects. According to Meitei Mythology, it is the sacred spot where Moirang Thoibi, a revered figure, used to fish during El Chingba.

The resumption of phumdi removal is poised to have multifaceted benefits. Firstly, it contributes to the preservation of Loktak Lake’s delicate ecosystem, ensuring a sustainable environment for aquatic life. Secondly, it aligns with the cultural heritage of the region, reviving the connection between the community and the mythological significance of the channel.

The collaborative effort with local fishermen reflects a community-driven approach to environmental conservation. By actively involving those who rely on the lake for their livelihoods, the initiative seeks to strike a balance between ecological preservation and the needs of the local population.

One of the primary advantages of phumdi removal is the facilitation of smoother navigation for fishing boats. This not only boosts the local fishing industry but also enhances accessibility for villagers who depend on the channel for transportation and daily activities.

The project’s resumption after a six-year gap underscores the commitment to addressing environmental concerns and preserving cultural heritage. As the removal progresses, it is expected to contribute significantly to the sustainable management of Loktak Lake, ensuring a harmonious coexistence of ecological preservation and cultural reverence.
