Imphal: In a recent article, Environmental Journalist Rajesh Salam provided a comprehensive overview of the Loktak Hydro Electric Project and its profound implications for the local community, with a particular focus on the challenges confronting fishermen in the Loktak region. Executed by the National Hydro Project Corporation (NHPC) Ltd., the project’s persistent issues, including insufficient water due to the Ithai Barrage, were discussed, shedding light on the ongoing struggles faced by the community.

Salam’s analysis took a critical stance, emphasizing the negative impact of the Loktak Project on Manipur. He underscored a notable gap between local and central perspectives, pointing out the NHPC’s apparent indifference to concerns raised by both the state government and the public. Playwright Ranjit Ningthouja further stressed the urgency of prioritizing the preservation of Loktak over endorsing the Loktak Project, calling for insightful leadership to address conservation challenges effectively.

The article highlighted a recent public convention attended by approximately 1000 people, featuring prominent speakers such as Ranjit Ningthouja, Rajesh Salam, RK Birjit, and K. Jugeshwor. The assembly passionately expressed their opposition with slogans like “No extension of NHPC” and a resolute declaration that “We won’t survive without Loktak.” This collective determination underscored the community’s strong resistance to the continuation of NHPC’s influence, emphasizing the crucial need to safeguard Loktak for the well-being of the people.
