Imphal: The seven courageous women from Awang Sekmai in Imphal West District, Manipur, have made a resounding statement against the year-long violence that has afflicted the region since May 3, 2024. Their bold act of shaving their heads and embarking on a cycle rally from Sekmai to Kangla fort speaks volumes about their commitment to advocating for peace and the protection of indigenous communities and Manipur’s territorial integrity.
Throughout their symbolic journey, which includes offerings of prayers to Lord Ibidhou Pakhnagba, these women showcase their unwavering determination to end the ongoing crisis. Dressed in black as a sign of mourning, they carry placards with messages such as “We Want Peace” and “Protect Territorial Integrity of Manipur,” amplifying their call for peace.
The decision to shave their heads holds profound significance, as hair is traditionally considered a symbol of beauty for women. By sacrificing this symbol and participating in the rally, they aim to emphasize the gravity of their distress over the ongoing turmoil and urge the government to address the concerns of affected mothers in the state.
Their courageous actions serve as a poignant plea for peace and stability in Manipur, resonating with the sentiments of many impacted by the turmoil. Their protest underscores the human toll of conflicts and highlights the urgent need for meaningful dialogue and resolution to ensure a brighter future for Manipur and its people.
