In light of the escalating violence in Manipur’s Jiribam district, newly-elected Member of Parliament Dr. Angomcha Bimol Akoijam addressed a press conference, expressing his concerns over the timing and motives behind the recent incidents. Dr. Akoijam remarked, “I am intrigued by the timing of this incident, coming just after the elections. This appears to be the work of those who wish to perpetuate the crisis in Manipur for their own benefit, whether personal or otherwise.”
During the press conference, Dr. Akoijam urged caution and responsibility in communication amidst the ongoing unrest. “My appeal to my fellow citizens in Manipur is to be careful in our speech. We must avoid provoking emotions, especially on social media. Responsible reporting and expression of opinions are crucial.”
Highlighting the dangers of misinformation and deliberate provocations, Dr. Akoijam cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric. “Our efforts should be to mitigate the crisis as much as possible. There are those who want to destroy our state and provoke conflict. We must be careful not to use provocative language and instead act responsibly.”
He called for improved security measures, noting, “I have urged the district authority to revamp security arrangements. While some areas lack reinforcement, steps are being taken to address this. I recently spoke with a security officer who assured me that reinforcements are on the way.”
Reflecting on past events Dr. Bimol stated, “We have learned from last year’s incidents, such as the destruction of Meitei localities like Khumujamba Leikai in Churachandpur, Tengnoupal (moreh) and kangpokpi. Certain elements are attempting to create divisions similar to the partition of India and Pakistan. The state must protect life and property without resorting to forced relocations, which are unconstitutional and promote division.”
Dr. Bimol emphasized the need for careful reporting, advising the media to avoid specifics that could exacerbate tensions. “I have deliberately avoided mentioning which community’s villages are affected. We should let police and security officers conduct their investigations without rushing to conclusions.”
Condemning the destruction of property, he stated, “There is no justification for burning down houses. We must handle such matters with care. I condemn this incident and any attempts to perpetuate violence in Manipur. This only serves those who wish to harm the state. Our response should be responsible action and trust in legitimate state security forces and institutions.”
Dr. Bimol concluded by urging citizens to push for action and hold security forces accountable for maintaining peace and order.
