Imphal: On the occasion of Loktak Day, we come together to celebrate the lifeline of Manipur. Loktak Lake, which holds immense ecological, cultural, and economie significance for the people of the region. This precious Ramsar site is a symbol of our natural heritage, and its conservation is not only vital for the environment but for the well-being of the communities that depend on it. Loktak Lake’s delicate ecosystem., with its floating phumdis and rich biodiversity, stands as a testament to the beauty of nature’s balance.
The Loktak Development Authority (LDA) remains dedicated to preserving this unique wetland through ongoing conservation efforts, and tomorrow’s 35th Loktak Day celebrations underscore our collective responsibility in this mission. The festivities will begin with the ‘Run for Loktak,’ organised by The Youth Development Association, Ningthoukhong, and sponsored by LDA and NHPC. This run, which will be flagged off by LDA Chairnan Shri M Asnikumar Singh in the presence of Project Director Shri L Bhagaton Singh and SE Shri Ng Sanajaoba Singh. aims to raise awareness about Loktak Lake and inspire the youth to take an active role in its conservation.
Following this, a Puja will be held for Loktak Ema Lairembi, along with the ceremonial release of fish fingerlings at Loktak Lairembi Ground, organised by Loktak Lake Development Organisation, Manipur (LLDOM), in partnership with LDA, with fingerlings provided by the Department of Fisheries, Govt of Manipur. This event symbolises the restoration and rejuvenation of the lake’s ecosystem.
The celebrations will continue at Thanga Higher Secondary School, where Hon’ble Chairman of LDA will be joined by Shri L Joykumar Singh, IFS, Addl. Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Research & Planning), Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife,Territorial Circle I & II, Administration & Planning). Forest Department, Govt of Manipur and other dignitaries. The programme will feature cultural perfornances by students, a folk song by Miss Nganthoibi Ningthoujam celebrating Loktak Ema, and the prize distribution for the painting competition held on World Environment Day 2024.
The highlight of the day will be the State-lęvel seminar on ‘Loktak Lake – Challenges Ahead. where eminent speakers, including Prof. Ksh Lalbihari Singh (Life Science Department, Manipur University), Shri K Jugeshwore (Environmentalist), and Shri Ng Sanajaoba Meitei (SE, LDA), will shed light on the evolving dynamics of Loktak’s ecosystem, the impact of Ithai Barrage, and ongoing conservation efforts.
