One-Day Waterbirds Awareness Campaign Successfully Concludes at Thanga, Loktak Lake

Thanga, Manipur: As part of its ongoing conservation and restoration efforts, the Loktak Development Authority (LDA) and the Forest Department,Govt of Manipur In collaboration with Environmental Social Reformation and Sangai Protection Forum (ESRSPF), United Clubs of Thanga (UCT), and ARICA, Thanga Chingkha, organised a one-day Waterbirds Awareness Campaign at Chaoba Hill, Thanga-I. The campaign aimed to highlight the critical role of communities in the conservation of waterbirds and fostering community participation and awareness.

The event saw the participation of esteemed dignitaries, including Shri M. Asnikumar Singh, Hon’ble Chairman, Loktak Development Authority (LDA); Shri K. Jugeshwore Singh, a renowned waterbird conservationist; Shri Oinam Maipakchao Singh, National Youth Awardee and President, UCT; Dr N Yaima Singh , President Sangai Protection Forum; Shri H Geetchandra Sharma, RO, Moirang Forest Range, DFO Bishnupur, senior officials from LDA and the Forest Department; and representatives from local organisations including key woman leaders of Thanga .

Presiding over the event, Shri M. Asnikumar Singh underscored the significance of waterbirds in Loktak Lake’s ecological and cultural landscape, particularly in its designation as a Ramsar site. “The waterbirds of Loktak are not just part of our ecosystem but are deeply interwoven with our heritage and traditions. Their presence signifies the ecological health of Loktak, which sustains livelihoods, biodiversity, and the spirit of our community,” he remarked.

Shri Asnikumar further highlighted the ongoing conservation initiatives led by the LDA and the vital role of community involvement. “Our efforts are holistic, focusing on restoring Loktak Lake while ensuring the well-being of its surrounding communities. Conservation cannot succeed without the active participation of the people, and I urge everyone to take ownership of these efforts. Loktak must remain a thriving haven for both humans and wildlife,” he added.

In his keynote address, Shri Kumam Jugeshwore Singh detailed the rare and significant waterbird species that inhabit Loktak’s wetlands. He emphasised their role in maintaining ecological balance and their symbolic relationship with the community. “The presence of waterbirds reflects the health of Loktak Lake and the harmonious relationship between the community and nature,” he said.

Addressing the issue of illegal waterbird hunting, Shri H Geetchandra Sharma, Range Officer, Moirang Forest Range elaborated on the department’s actions to tackle this pressing concern. “We have implemented stringent measures to combat poaching and urge the community to report any illegal activities. Protecting Loktak’s biodiversity requires collective vigilance and cooperation,” he noted.

The event concluded with a collective pledge to conserve Loktak Lake’s waterbirds and reaffirmed the commitment to safeguarding its rich biodiversity. Shri M. Asnikumar Singh delivered a heartfelt appeal: “Conserving Loktak Lake is about preserving the soul of Manipur. Let us unite to protect this natural treasure, especially our migratory avian guests, for future generations.”

This campaign served as an essential platform to enhance awareness, foster collaboration, and inspire community-led conservation efforts, ensuring the preservation of Loktak Lake’s ecological and cultural legacy.
