Khordak Village:
Shri M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman of the Loktak Development Authority (LDA), attended the 32nd Foundation Day of the Environmental Social Reformation & Sangai Protection Forum (ESRSPF) as the Chief Guest at Khordak Village. The event saw the participation of key officials, conservationists, and community leaders, including Shri Loijam Joykumar Singh, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife); Shri Tourangbam Brajakumar Singh, Director, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, Manipur; Dr. Kh. Shamungou Singh, Chairman, Technical Committee, State Wetland Authority, Manipur; Shri T. Budhi Singh, Former President, ESRSPF; and Shri Oinam Maipakchao Singh, President, United Clubs of Thanga, along with womenfolk and youth representatives.
Speaking at the event, Shri M. Asnikumar Singh reflected on his past association with ESRSPF and commended the organisation for its 32 years of tireless efforts in advocating for the conservation of the endangered Sangai deer and Loktak Lake.
“The conservation of Loktak Lake and its unique ecosystem is not just an environmental responsibility but also a social and economic necessity. The Sangai, which is the pride of Manipur, is under severe threat due to habitat degradation, largely caused by the ecological impact of the Ithai Barrage. The rich flora and fauna of Loktak and Keibul Lamjao are declining rapidly, affecting both biodiversity and the livelihoods of those dependent on the lake,” he said.
He further emphasised the urgent need for collective action to restore the ecological balance of Keibul Lamjao National Park and Loktak Lake, ensuring a safe and thriving habitat for the Sangai.
“The Loktak Development Authority, along with the Wildlife Wing, Forest Department, and Directorate of Environment & Climate Change, is actively working on habitat improvement and ecological restoration of the lake. However, this mission cannot succeed without the support and cooperation of the local communities. We must come together to protect Loktak, our mother lake, and preserve it for future generations,” he added.
As part of the programme, Shri M. Asnikumar Singh also distributed Fisherman Cards to the fishers of Nongmaikhong village, reinforcing the LDA’s and state government’s commitment to supporting local fishing communities and promoting sustainable fishing practices in Loktak Lake.
The event concluded with a renewed pledge from all stakeholders to strengthen conservation efforts, enhance community engagement, and implement sustainable solutions for the long-term protection of Loktak Lake and the Sangai deer.
