New Delhi: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) strongly condemns the brutal attack on journalist Swati Hadkar by the sand mafia in Chiplun, Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra on April 13, 2025. This vicious assault on a woman journalist, who was courageously documenting illegal sand excavation activities for her YouTube channel ‘Chiplun News,’ is a direct attack on press freedom and the fundamental right to report the truth.
Swati Hadkar’s fearless journalism exposed the rampant illegal activities of the sand mafia, and this attack underscores the grave risks journalists face while performing their duties. The IJU is appalled by the audacity of such criminal elements and the failure of local authorities to ensure a safe environment for media professionals. This incident is a stark reminder of the increasing threats to journalists in Maharashtra, as evidenced by the tragic killing of journalist Shashikant Warishe in Ratnagiri in February 2023.We demand immediate and decisive action from the Maharashtra government to bring the perpetrators to justice. The IJU calls for a thorough investigation into the attack on Swati Hadkar, ensuring that all those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.The IJU stands in solidarity with Swati Hadkar and reiterates its unwavering commitment to defending the rights of journalists to work without fear. We appeal to the central government, the Press Council of India, and civil society to join us in condemning this attack and advocating for stronger protections for the press.
Geetartha Pathak, President, IJU and former member of Press Council of India and Sabina Inderjit, Secretary General, IJU and Vice President, International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) said in a statement : “This shameful attack on Swati Hadkar reflects the growing hostility towards journalists in India, particularly those exposing corruption and illegal activities. The IJU, in alignment with the IFJ, demands that the Maharashtra authorities prioritize the safety of journalists and create a secure environment for media work.
