Imphal: MLA Khumukcham Joykishan on Thursday called on the media to play an active role in restoring peace and harmony in Manipur while officially announcing the installation of an elevator at the Manipur Press Club in Imphal.
Staying true to a commitment made during last year’s Foundation Day of the Press Club, Joykishan confirmed that he will personally fund the installation of the elevator—a long-standing demand by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM). He urged AMWJU and EGM members to choose an auspicious date to lay the foundation stone and begin the construction work.
Highlighting the media’s critical role, especially during times of crisis, Joykishan stressed that while the government is responsible for maintaining law and order, the media acts as a vital bridge between the people and the authorities. “Media not only reports the truth but also helps guide the government and strengthen public confidence,” he said, urging journalists to take an active role in the peace-building process.
AMWJU President Asem Bhakta requested the installation of an 8-person capacity elevator to make the top floor more accessible for elderly visitors and to optimize space usage in the building. EGM President Khomdram Khogen, senior editor Irengbam Arun, journalist A. Balkrishna and other media representatives also attended the event.
The AMWJU expressed heartfelt gratitude to MLA Joykishan for his generous gesture and wished him all the best in his future endeavours. Joykishan’s continued support for the media fraternity—especially his financial assistance for journalists’ medical needs over the past decade—has earned him deep respect and appreciation from media professionals across the state.
