Imphal: The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU) has served a legal notice on the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), demanding the withdrawal of a report containing allegedly defamatory allegations against the journalists’ body.
The notice, drafted and served by Advocate Hijam Chandrakumar, demands an unconditional apology from PUCL for the report, which AMWJU claims contains baseless and unverified allegations.

The PUCL report, which claims to detail media testimonies on the conflict in Manipur, allegedly labels AMWJU as “Godi media” and accuses it of having a partisan bias. AMWJU has categorically denied these allegations, stating that its membership is governed by its constitution and national laws.
If PUCL fails to comply with the demands within 30 days, AMWJU will initiate legal proceedings, including a civil suit for damages and a criminal case for defamation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The move is seen as a step by AMWJU to protect its reputation and uphold journalistic ethics.

Khwirakpam Naoba
