Imphal: Social activist and transgender rights champion Malem Thongam was given a hero’s welcome in Imphal on Friday, marking the end of her remarkable 77-day cycling journey from Delhi’s Qutb Minar. Thousands of supporters lined the streets, overcome with emotion, as Thongam rode into the city with a message of peace and unity.
Thongam’s journey, which began on October 2, 2025, Gandhi Jayanti, aimed to bridge the gaps between communities torn apart by ethnic violence in Manipur. She met officials, spoke to communities, and listened to stories of grief and resilience, spreading a message of reconciliation and hope.
Despite facing threats from Kuki groups, Thongam persevered, escorted by security forces to ensure her safety. Her arrival at the historic Kangla Fort was met with tears, garlands, and prayers, as hundreds gathered to welcome her home.
Thongam’s journey is a testament to the power of collective healing and the impact one person can have in promoting peace and unity. Her courage and determination have inspired many, and her message of hope continues to resonate with the people of Manipur.
