Imphal: Inspired by Vietnam’s ecotourism initiatives, I envision a similar model for Manipur’s Karang Island. Our recent All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) Vietnam tour, supported by DIPR and Tourism Department, showcased the power of community-led tourism.
Our Vietnam Experience
We visited Con Thoi Son Island in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, known for its fruit orchards, local honey production, and traditional village life. The island’s tranquil atmosphere, delicious local food, and warm hospitality left a lasting impression. We enjoyed a delightful froud (a local breakfast dish), sipped Hanny tea, and relished a delicious lunch amidst nature.
We also explored Hanoi Bay, strolled through Hanoi Old Quarter’s charming streets, and experienced the vibrant energy of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – its bustling streets, War Remnants Museum, and mouth-watering food were unforgettable! The Cu Chi Tunnels were a poignant reminder of Vietnam’s history. We were fascinated by the local handloom and handicrafts, particularly the intricate embroidery and woodcarvings.

Applying Vietnam’s Lessons to Karang Island
– Eco-friendly infrastructure: solar power, bio-toilets
– Community engagement: local guides, homestays
– Cultural preservation: traditional huts, handicrafts, music
– Local cuisine promotion: fresh fish stalls, traditional dishes
– Handloom and handicrafts promotion: showcase local artisans, sell local products.

Sharing Our Experience
Vietnam was an incredible experience! The food, people, and scenery – everything was amazing! If you’re planning a trip, don’t miss Con Thoi Son Island and the Mekong Delta. And, of course, try the Dong (Vietnamese fermented rice noodle dish) – it’s a must-try!
Karang Island has the potential to be just as stunning. Let’s showcase its beauty, promote sustainable tourism, and support local artisans!
