Imphal: The 8th Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Football Tournament 2026, organised by the Social Workers’ Congress (SWC), concluded today with a closing ceremony held at Khongman.
The tournament, which commenced on March 22, witnessed the participation of 14 teams representing the Assembly Constituencies of Kshetrigao, Andro, Keirao and Thongju in Imphal East district. Sponsored by the Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Trust, the event aimed to promote sportsmanship and youth engagement.
In the final match, SWC-A defeated MMC, Mongkhanglambi by a narrow 1–0 margin to clinch the championship title.

Attending the closing ceremony as chief guest, RK Meghan, also known as Sanayaima, highlighted the importance of sports, stating that games play a crucial role not only in physical development but also in building discipline, character and mental strength among the youth. He noted that sportspersons represent the identity and pride of the state while promoting unity and social responsibility.
Social scientist Dhanabir Laishram underscored Manipur’s strong sporting culture and called for greater efforts to identify and nurture young talent. He also expressed concern over the shrinking availability of playgrounds and the gradual decline of full-format football matches.
Thingujam Oxford stressed the importance of teamwork and leadership in sports, while N Phillip remarked that football and other popular games have significantly contributed to strengthening Manipur’s identity and fostering unity among communities.
SWC president A Birendra lauded the successful organisation of the tournament and its role in encouraging young players.
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony. The champions were awarded Rs. 50,000, while the runners-up received Rs. 30,000. The third and fourth place teams were awarded Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000 respectively. Additional cash prizes were also presented for the Best Discipline Team, Best Player and Highest Goal Scorer.
