Imphal: (Waari Singbul Network) In a significant move, the state assembly on Thursday unanimously resolved to urge the Centre to abrogate the Suspension of Operation (SoO), a tripartite ceasefire pact with Kuki-Zo militants operating in the conflict -torn state.
This came amid the stepped up protests across the valley districts , seeking the government to annul the ceasefire deal.
During a short discussion proposed by the opposition bench on the “excesses and atrocities” committed by the Kuki militant groups, the house adopted the resolution.
Numbering 24, the militant groups under two umbrella groups – United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO)- inked the SoO with the Cenre and the state government in 2008.
These groups have been accused of breaching the ceasefire ground rules, attacking Meitei populace in the ongoing ethnic strife and indulging in narco- terrorism in collaboration with foreign terrorists.
Having heard the in-depth the deliberations of the MLAs of both the ruling and opposition benches, the assembly unanimously resolved to urge the Centre to abrogate the Soo pact with all the Kuki-Zo group militants.
35 legislators of the 60-member state assembly, in a meeting last month, had decided that the SoO agreement with militants engaged in “killing civilians” be abrogated immediately.
Biren Singh, taking to Facebook said “The 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on the 2nd day of its 5th session, unanimously resolved to urge the Central Government to completely abrogate the SoO pact with all the Chin Kuki militant groups.”
“This decision comes in the interest of ensuring peace and security in the region,” he added.
During Thursday’s sitting, the CM informed the assembly that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendar Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah , the present government is trying its level best to bring peace and tranquility in Manipur.
He also assured that under the guidance from the Central government and with the elected members of the House, he would give all his efforts to bring peace and normalcy in the state.
