Imphal; The State Environment Conclave, organized by Students for Development (SFD), ABVP Manipur state unit, Loktak Development Authority (LDA), Environment, Ecology & Climate Change (Govt. of Manipur), and IIIT Manipur, was held at the IIIT Mantripukhri conference hall, Imphal. The event, themed “Protect our Planet, Secure our Future,” featured three sessions—Inaugural, Technical, and Valedictory—addressing key issues such as climate action, renewable energy, plastic pollution (with a focus on the 3 ‘R’s concept), sustainable living, soil conservation, landslide prevention, and the protection of natural water bodies.
Shri M. Asnikumar Singh, Chairman of the LDA, attended as the Chief Guest, alongside notable dignitaries like Shri Rk Amarjit Singh, IFS, CF, Central Circle cum Spl. Secy (Forest, Environmental & Climate Change) Govt of Manipur; Shri N. Bijen Singh, Scientist, Dept. of Environment & Climate Change; Shri N. Ganesh, IFS, DFO, Central Division, Govt of Manipur; Dr. Th. David Singh, Associate Professor, NIT Manipur; Prof. Krishnan Baskar, Director, IIIT Manipur; Shri Rahul Gaur (National In-Charge, SFD, ABVP); and Shri Surjit Kheshtrimayum, Environmental Activist and Secretary, ADAM Kakching, Manipur.
In his speech, Shri Asnikumar Singh emphasized the urgent need to address climate change, calling it “one of the most pressing challenges facing humanity today, with far-reaching impacts on ecosystems, economies, and communities.” He stressed the importance of a collective, comprehensive response to protect natural resources, livelihoods, and future generations. Shri Asnikumar highlighted the significance of sustainable development in balancing economic progress with environmental protection.
He also spoke about Manipur’s unique ecological challenges, stating, “In a state renowned for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems, the stakes are particularly high. Conservation is not just necessary but critical.” He noted that sustainable development in Manipur requires careful planning to protect fragile ecosystems while promoting economic growth, with community engagement playing a vital role.
Quoting the proverb “Think Globally, Act Locally,” Shri Asnikumar emphasized the importance of local actions in global environmental efforts. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vasudev Kutumbakam” (One Earth, One Family), underlining the interconnectedness of humanity in facing environmental challenges.
Shri Asnikumar commended the efforts of Students for Development (SFD) for organizing the conclave, advocating for environmental conservation and sustainable development at both local and national levels. He remarked on the role of students as key drivers of change, stating, “Students, as future leaders, have a special responsibility in this fight. Their creativity, passion, and commitment make them powerful advocates for a sustainable world.”
He concluded by expressing his gratitude to SFD for organizing the event and pledged further collaborations to promote environmental awareness and conservation in the future.
