Imphal: This sit-in was led by the All Manipur Working Journalists’Union and Editors’ Guild Manipur, held at Keishampat Leimajam Leikai Community Hall in Imphal. Journalists and editors came together to demand action—not just words.
This protest was in response to the Manipur government’s inaction over the obstruction of media personnel at Gwaltabi by 4 Mahar Regiment personnel on May 20.

The journalists displayed placards with slogans such as:
– *”Protect Media Freedom”*
– *”Don’t Gag the Media”*
– *”No Truth Behind Barricades”*
– *”Free the Press — Let Manipur Hear the Whole Story”*
The protest is part of an ongoing movement by AMWJU and EGM, which has included:
– Boycott of Government News: AMWJU and EGM have been boycotting government-related news and information.
– Black Badge Protest: Journalists have been wearing black badges to protest the government’s inaction.
– Slogan Campaign: The groups have been disseminating weekly slogans demanding protection of media rights.
The Gwaltabi incident occurred when journalists were blocked by security personnel while covering the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul. The security personnel demanded the word “Manipur” be removed from the vehicle.
AMWJU President A. Bhakta expressed concern over the government’s silence, stating that a probe was ordered into the incident, but no response no action has been taken.
EGM General Secretary Yumnam Rupachandra warned that if the government continues to ignore their demands, they will escalate their agitation.
