Imphal: The All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) and the Editors Guild Manipur (EGM) have decided to withdraw their ongoing agitation related to the Gwaltabi incident of May 20, 2025. This decision followed a joint meeting of AMWJU and EGM held at the Manipur Press Club on Saturday, after authorities initiated assurances and actions.
The press bodies noted that the Governor of Manipur assured a fair inquiry into the incident, leading to the formation of a two-member Inquiry Committee. The Committee submitted its report on June 13, 2025. The Government of Manipur has officially informed AMWJU and EGM that it has accepted the Committee’s recommendations. Additionally, directives have been issued to relevant departments and security agencies to prevent such incidents from happening again.
While ending the agitation, AMWJU and EGM expressed cautious optimism, emphasizing that the safety and dignity of media personnel are non-negotiable. They warned that if the Inquiry Committee’s recommendations aren’t implemented, the press bodies would take renewed democratic actions. The organizations thanked colleagues, civil society groups, and the people of Manipur for their support in upholding press freedom and accountability.
