Indian Journalists Union condemns filing of false case against Pranab Sarkar

Delhi: The Indian Journalists Union (IJU) expresses grave concern and solidarity with the Tripura
Journalists Union (TJU) regarding the reported filing of a false and motivated case by Ranjit
Debbarma, a surrendered militant leader and current MLA of the Tipra Motha Party, against
Pranab Sarkar, All India Secretary of the TJU and Executive President of its State Committee.
The IJU strongly condemns this baseless case, which appears designed to defame Pranab
Sarkar and sow confusion among the public. We stand with the TJU in dismissing the
allegations, particularly as the identity card cited in the complaint was already widely circulated
on social media and broadcast by several news channels, rendering the claims unfounded. The
IJU acknowledges the commendable work of the Tripura Journalists Union, the largest
organization of journalists in Tripura, representing members from all communities. We applaud
Pranab Sarkar’s contributions, particularly his pioneering role during his tenure as Secretary of
the Agartala Press Club in establishing the Khumulwng Press Club—the first platform for tribal
journalists in Tripura—with government support. This initiative reflects his commitment to
fostering unity and inclusivity among journalists. We are deeply troubled by the allegations that
Ranjit Debbarma is attempting to create divisions within the journalistic community by filing a
fabricated case and misusing Sarkar’s profile photo on social media for incitement. Such
actions are unacceptable and undermine the freedom and safety of journalists. The IJU urges
the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura, Dr. Manik Saha, to take immediate legal action against
Ranjit Debbarma for his provocative actions and to ensure adequate security for Pranab Sarkar.
We stand firmly with the TJU in their resolve to protect journalists’ rights and warn that
continued acts of harassment may compel the journalistic community to launch a nationwide
movement in protest. The IJU calls for unity among journalists and reaffirms its commitment to
safeguarding press freedom and the dignity of media professionals across India.
