Imphal: The 8th edition of the Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Football Tournament began at the SWC Ground, Khongman, Imphal, with the theme “Football Development and Grooming Leadership.” Organized by the Social Workers’ Congress (SWC), the tournament aims to nurture young football talent from the grassroots level. 14 teams are participating, showcasing the region’s potential in sports.

Thingujam Oxford, a candidate from 5-Thongju Assembly Constituency, emphasized the importance of discipline, health, and sports in society, highlighting Manipur’s reputation as a sports hub. He noted challenges faced by athletes due to the ongoing conflict and financial constraints, which hinder young talents from pursuing opportunities.

The tournament is sponsored by the Thingujam (O) Nganbi Devi Memorial Trust, established in honour of Oxford’s grandmother, late Thingujam Ongbi Nganbi Devi. The trust supports local initiatives, student welfare, and senior citizens, including organizing football tournaments across four Assembly Constituencies and honouring meritorious students.

Dignitaries like Rinku Khumukcham, Editor of Imphal Times, M. Kulajit, former international hockey player, and A. Birendra, President of SWC Khongman, attended the inaugural function, marking the start of the tournament. The event is expected to promote football and sportsmanship among the youth, inspiring the next generation of athletes.
