Imphal: Manipur observed World Tourism Day 2026 today at Sangai Ethnic Park, Moirang Khunou, Bishnupur District, on the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”.
The celebration was jointly attended by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Bhalla said the true strength of Manipur tourism is not just its scenic landscapes and monuments, but its people and communities. He added that the government is actively promoting homestays to empower local families and ensure tourism revenue reaches the grassroots.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh said that before the 2023 crisis, around 1.75 lakh tourists visited Manipur, higher than Mizoram at that time. Today, Mizoram has crossed 8 lakh tourists while Manipur has seen a drastic decline.
Citing Sikkim, which receives over 17 lakh tourists annually due to stable law and order, the Chief Minister said tourists will not visit without peace. He stressed that beautification alone is not enough and overall facilities must be upgraded to international standards.
Tourism Minister Khuraijam Loken Singh said tourism significantly contributes to State revenue and unity among the 36 communities is essential for peace and development. MLA of Thanga AC Tongbram Robindro Singh called for community-centred tourism and encouraged young entrepreneurs.
During the programme, the Governor launched the Manipur Tech Innovation Foundation (MTIF) Portal, while the Chief Minister relaunched the revamped ‘Explore Manipur – Re-Imagining Tourism’ Portal.
In a major announcement, the State Government declared that NorthEast United FC will bring the Indian Super League (ISL) to Manipur for the first time, with a match scheduled on November 24.
The programme was organised by the Department of Tourism and was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, Chief Secretary, DGP and other dignitaries.
