Imphal: While global stats for mental health problems is thirteen out of hundred which hadshot up to five times following the Covid 19 pandemic, for the restive state ofManipur, the ongoing Manipur violence has further worsened the scenario to onein every eight persons with mental health issue, according to head ofDepartment of psychiatry, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). Dr.R.K. Leni, HOD, department of Psychiatry RIMS, who maintains that no one can beconsidered as healthy without a robust mental health as physical health must goin tandem with a sound mental health said “one in every eight persons inManipur is deemed to be having mental health issues due to the current turmoil.” Manipur’sfamed psychiatrist was speaking at the World Mental Health Day observationunder the theme, ‘Mental Health is a Universal Human Right,’ held on Tuesday atRIMS. He also lamented that there is asocial stigma attached to mental health issues. The problem is compounded withmost people normally do not realize they have mental health problems and do notknow where to seek remedy. Manipur’s Healthminister, Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh while speaking at another function organizedby National Mental Health Program, National Health Mission & Directorate ofHealth Services, Manipur said that nobody is without stress in this modern world henceit has become necessary to cope with one’s stress at the right time. Referring tothe stressful situation that the state is currently going through because ofthe ethnic violence, the minister appreciated the role played by the State MentalHealth team during the crisis, particularly for their role in identifying the post-traumaticstress order affected children and providing consulting to overcome the mental healthissue of the affected children. The minister assertedthat there is a need to create an atmosphere where all individuals are mentallyfit and no one should hesitate to share his or her stress with others in orderto overcome it. A march rallyand slogan & painting competition was also organized as a part of theobservance.
