Imphal: As Manipur commemorates Nupee Lal Numit, acknowledging the historical significance of Manipuri women, a lingering question arises: Are women in Manipur truly experiencing improved living conditions compared to the hardships of British oppression?

The event at G.P. Women’s College Central Hall, attended by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, highlighted Manipur’s history and the role of women in shaping its narrative. While symbolic gestures were made towards gender inclusivity, the reality for many women on the outskirts of Imphal tells a different story.

Despite ceremonial acknowledgments, women in Manipur, or the Nupee, continue to face multifaceted challenges. The contrast between official celebrations and grassroots struggles emphasizes the nuanced complexities of gender dynamics in the region.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh recognized women’s enduring contributions but acknowledged the government’s failure to ensure peace and security for women. Two initiatives were announced, but skepticism exists regarding their true impact and whether they address the root causes of women’s challenges.

The ‘Chief Minister’s Ima Nongthangleima Yaipha Tengbang Scheme’ aims to provide financial assistance to women, but questions arise about the effectiveness of such initiatives in the face of persistent societal challenges.

Addressing the law and order situation, the Chief Minister called for unity among communities and emphasized the collective responsibility to restore peace. However, incidents of vigilantism indicate a crisis of confidence in established institutions, demanding government intervention and a comprehensive approach.

The toll on families is evident, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive measures beyond symbolic gestures. The government must focus on the welfare and empowerment of Manipuri women, addressing root causes and contributing to a more secure future for all.
