DURAND CUP TROPHY TOUR RECEIVES GRAND WELCOME IN IMPHAL

IMPHAL: Imphal welcomed the Trophy Tour of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup on Wednesday as the tournament’s three historic trophies arrived in the State ahead of the upcoming competition.

The event, held at the City Convention Centre, brought together Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, senior government officials, security personnel, representatives of participating clubs, and members of the football fraternity on stage during the rendition of the National Song, Vande Mataram.

Dignitaries present included Major General Gaurav Sharma, SC, SM, Inspector General, Assam Rifles (South); Shri Mukesh Singh, IPS, Director General of Police, Manipur; Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, Chief of Staff, Headquarters; Dr. Puneet Kumar Goel, IAS, Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur; Shri Kuldiep Singh, IPS (Retd.), Security Adviser, Government of Manipur; and Major General Shubhankar Basu, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division.

Speaking at the programme, Governor Bhalla said the return of the Durand Cup to Khuman Lampak Main Stadium represented more than a sporting occasion. He described it as an opportunity to foster optimism, strengthen social bonds, and showcase Manipur’s resilience.

Chief Minister Khemchand Singh emphasised that football remains deeply embedded in the State’s culture and identity, and hosting Durand Cup matches in Imphal would create opportunities for aspiring footballers.

The programme also felicitated renowned sportspersons from Manipur including Kunjarani Devi, Sarita Devi, Bombayla Devi, and Oinam Bembem Devi.

 

Earlier in the day, the Durand Cup, President’s Cup, and Simla Trophy were flagged off from Sendra, overlooking Loktak Lake, by Home, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Govindas Konthoujam. Accompanied by the Thangjing Riders, the trophies travelled through Moirang, Bishnupur, Tiddim Ground, Kangla Fort, and Manipur University before reaching Imphal.
