Logos, Nigeria : India’s rising fencing star, Moramba Laishram from Manipur, secured a bronze medal in the Men’s U-23 Sabre individual event at the Commonwealth Fencing Championship 2026, held in Lagos, Nigeria from August 9th to 14th. His performance contributed to India’s historic medal haul on the opening day of the competition.
Laishram, a Havaldar in the Indian Army, put on a dominant display to reach the podium. He was part of a remarkable clean sweep by India in the Men’s Sabre event. Nikhil Wagh won Gold, Lakshay Badser took Silver, while Laishram secured the bronze alongside fellow countryman Ashwini Arya, ensuring an all-Indian podium finish.
The Manipur athlete’s journey to the medal was highlighted by a crucial quarter-final victory over local Nigerian opponent AKINYOSOYE OLUWAFOLAYEMI, much to the disappointment of the home crowd. He followed this with a strong performance in the semi-finals before ultimately settling for a joint-bronze finish.
Laishram, son of the late Laishram Basanta Singh, hails from Singjamei, Manipur. His achievement in Lagos adds to his growing list of accolades, which includes a Gold medal at the 32nd Junior National Fencing Championship in 2024. He is also a seasoned competitor at the national level, having been named for the 35th Senior National Fencing Championship.
India dominated the first day of the championship, winning a total of 17 medals — 4 Gold, 4 Silver, and 9 Bronze. The Indian contingent reached the podium in all six individual events, showcasing the nation’s growing prowess in the sport. In the men’s epee event, Lokesh Vemani secured Silver, while other Indian fencers claimed bronze.
