Imphal: The Meitei Alliance has condemned in the strongest terms the continuing attacks and killings of civilians in the hill districts of Manipur, including Liangmai and Tangkhul Naga areas.
In a press statement issued today, the Alliance alleged brutal killings of innocent civilians and destruction of homes and livelihoods in Kamjong, Kangpokpi and Ukhrul districts, including reported cross-border attacks by Myanmar-based Kuki National Army – Burma (KNA-B).
The Alliance specifically referred to the reported killing of Naga civilian Ajinbou Ringkangmai in which his severed head remains unaccounted for, terming it an act of barbarity. It demanded immediate recovery of his remains and identification, arrest and prosecution of all perpetrators involved.
The statement noted that nearly three and a half years after violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, innocent people were still being killed, villages attacked and families terrorised despite the presence of Central and State security forces.
Raising concern over internally displaced persons (IDPs), the Alliance said tens of thousands continue to languish in overcrowded relief camps in undignified conditions, deprived of homes and livelihoods.
The Alliance also criticised ruling and opposition political parties, alleging they are preoccupied with forthcoming Assembly elections and narrow electoral interests while people continue to die and displaced families struggle to survive.
It called upon the Government of India, Government of Manipur and security agencies to end failure of civilian protection, prevent further attacks, ensure protection of vulnerable communities and prioritise safe and dignified return of all displaced persons to their original homes.
The Alliance further appealed to all political parties and elected representatives to rise above electoral calculations and place lives and dignity of people above political ambitions.
