Imphal: The SEEDS Complex at Sangaithel is set to turn greener and more vibrant in the coming years with the launch of the ‘SEEDS Green Legacy Orchard’ initiative.
An initiative of the Socio Economic and Environment Development Society (SEEDS) and the Editors’ Guild Manipur (EGM), the orchard was launched today with the theme “Planting Today, Nourishing Generations” aimed at promoting fruit tree plantation, a greener environment and sustainable livelihoods.

The orchard was formally launched by Hon’ble Minister Shri K. Govindas Singh, Minister for Home, Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of Manipur, by planting mature, fruit-bearing trees. The Minister himself also brought some mature trees for planting on the occasion. The Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur, co-sponsored the programme and extended support by contributing saplings and fruit-bearing trees.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Govindas appreciated the efforts of the SEEDS. He stressed that plantation alone is not enough and that sustained maintenance is key to ensuring the survival and growth of saplings.

He noted that with proper care and preservation, the SEEDS Complex will become a very pleasing and beautiful green space within the next four to five years. He also acknowledged the CRPF personnel for their role in looking after and safeguarding the complex.
The Green Legacy Orchard initiative seeks to develop the SEEDS Complex into a model green space through systematic planting and preservation of fruit-bearing trees.

Following the launch, the Home Minister also inspected the adjacent Olympian Park and reviewed its present condition.
A talk on plantation of horticulture plants was also given by the Assistant Agriculture Officer, Imphal West.
The function was attended by AMWJU President Asem Bhakta Singh, Editors’ Guild Manipur President Khogendra Khomdram, members of the print and electronic media, and members of SEEDS. The programme was supported by the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union and Manipur Hill Journalists’ Union.

The programme concluded with an interaction and lunch.
