Veteran journalist Kishore Seram, who hails from Imphal, Manipur, will be honoured with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at this year’s Kalyan Barooah Awards event to be held in Delhi on 11 December.
Jointly organized by the North East Media Forum (NEMF) and My Home India, the awards are given to journalists and media persons based in the Northeast or other parts of India for their efforts in promoting the northeastern region through reporting and story-telling.
Spanning a career of over 38 years, Kishore Seram has spent a significant part of his life in Delhi in various capacities on different news and media platforms and consistently worked to highlight the Northeast in mainstream media. Starting his journalistic journey with The Link magazine, he joined Patriot newspaper and worked as the Chief Reporter and Special Correspondent. He led the team at North East Sun magazine for 8 years as the Executive Editor.
He was the Acting News Editor at City Times of Khaleej Times in Dubai. He has also worked as the Assistant Editor of The Emirates Evening Post, Dubai. Returning from Dubai, he joined the Indian Express, New Delhi, as Senior Assistant Editor. After working as Senior Editor for six years at OPEN magazine, he quit to start his magazine Discover India’s Northeast, in 2014.
His brainchild, Discover India’s Northeast, is a platform that exclusively covers the Northeast, its bountiful nature, its people, its unique cultures, and rich heritage.
He has groomed a generation of journalists in some of India’s most reputed news and media houses. A raconteur with a great eye for detail, he has also produced and directed over a dozen documentary films on the Northeast, commissioned by the Ministry of Home Affairs and Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Other winners of the 2nd Kalyan Barooah Memorial Awards 2024 are: — in the print media category, Mubina Akhtar (freelance journalist). Mridusmanta Boruah (Pratidin Times) in the electronic media category. Dr Kshetrimayum Chitrabhanu Devi (Imphal Review of Arts and Politics) in the digital media category.
Farhana Ahmed from The Assam Tribune for her stories on human trafficking and forced migration got special mention by the Jury in the print media category. Similarly, Aparamita Das got special mention by the Jury for her photo essay under the still photography category.
The jury members included Utpal Borpujari, Moushumi Chakraborty, Sandeep Phukan, professor Sashwati Goswami and Sangeeta Barooah Pisharoty.
