New Delhi: The Horticulture Department, Manipur is participating in the Bharatiya Vyapar Mahotsav (BVM) being held at Pragati Maidan, Hall No. 3, New Delhi from 12th to 15th August 2026.
The Department has set up a stall to showcase Thangjing/Makhana of Manipur and its value-added products.
Around 600 stalls from across the country are participating in this Expo.
In the Manipur stall, the state’s large-scale Makhana cultivation, locally called Thangjing, and its different varieties along with huge market potential are being showcased. Makhana is mainly grown in the Loktak Lake range, which provides ideal agro-climatic conditions for its growth.
The stall has drawn significant public attention. A large number of visitors and potential buyers have visited the stall, where different varieties and value-added products of Thangjing/Makhana are on display. Many serious buyers have shown interest in purchasing Thangjing/Makhana products and other processed food items.
There is strong hope that Thangjing/Makhana can play a major role in strengthening Manipur’s rural economy and farmers’ livelihood.
The participation is supported with funding from the Makhana Development Scheme of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Government of India. The objective is to create awareness among consumers and explore new marketing and export opportunities for Manipur’s Makhana.
Dr. K. Debdutta Sharma, Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Manipur said:
“In the valley of Manipur, the wetlands, large water bodies, community village ponds and Loktak Lake can be effectively utilized for this project by the farmers. This will help in expanding Makhana cultivation and increasing income for our farmers.”
Officials including Chungong Pamei, Mission Director, MIDH, and other department officials attended the function.
