IMPHAL: Former United National Liberation Front (UNLF) chairman R.K. Sanayaima Singh, popularly known as Meghen, has called for a deeper understanding of the historical relationships among the Meiteis, Meitei Pangals and communities inhabiting Manipur’s surrounding hills.

He was speaking as Chief Guest at the book release function of “Zomi: Reclaiming Identity and Brotherhood” authored by journalist Naorem Mohen and Anthony Naulak, held today at Manipur Press Club, Imphal.

The programme was presided over by Dr. Kiran Yendrembam.
Speaking on the occasion, Meghen stressed the need to recognise distinct identities while acknowledging their historical, social and cultural connections. He highlighted the importance of mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence amid the continuing consequences of the ethnic violence that began in May 2023.

Reviewing the book, historian Dr. Takhellambam Bhabhananda cautioned against using historical accounts to establish exclusive ethnic or territorial claims, stressing that cultural identity and territorial sovereignty were separate questions requiring independent evidence.

Book seeks feedback
The authors said the book is an attempt to start a scholarly debate and not a final word. They invited historians, researchers and readers from all communities to give feedback, criticism and suggestions for future editions, so that the gaps in understanding the Zomi identity can be addressed collectively.

They stated that examining one community’s history should not diminish the historical position or rights of another and that the book wants feedback from all sections to make it more inclusive and evidence-based.

The book contains 206 pages and is priced at Rs. 1,200/-.The authors announced that a portion of the proceeds from the sale will be used to assist internally displaced persons (IDPs) of both Imphal and Churachandpur.
