Imphal (DIPR): The Manipur Information Commission organised the closing function of the Right to Information (RTI) Week Celebration 2026 at the Auditorium Hall of the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Imphal. The programme was organised under the sponsorship of the Department of Personnel & Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pension, Government of India.

The closing function was attended by Shri Th. Ibobi Singh, former State Chief Information Commissioner as the chief guest; Shri Oinam Sunil Singh, former State Chief Information Commissioner (In-charge) and Advisor (Media) to the Chief Minister, and Smt. Nungshitombi Athokpam, State Information Commissioner, as guests of honour. Shri Koijam Radhashyam Singh, State Chief Information Commissioner, presided over the function.

Speaking as chief guest, Shri Th. Ibobi Singh highlighted the importance of the Right to Information Act, 2005, in promoting transparency and accountability in government functioning. He noted that the Manipur Information Commission (MIC), established on September 13, 2006, has played an important role in enabling citizens to access information held by public authorities.

He stressed the need for effective implementation of the RTI Act in Manipur, noting challenges in its functioning and concerns about the safety of RTI activists. He also urged public authorities to ensure timely access to information and proactively disclose departmental activities, funds, staffing and organisational details through official websites and other platforms. Citizens were encouraged to use the Act responsibly to address public grievances and promote welfare of society.

Shri Oinam Sunil Singh emphasised the need to popularise the RTI Act in Manipur to promote transparency, accountability and reduce corruption in government functioning. He clarified that RTI is not a grievance redressal mechanism but a tool for obtaining official information and documentary evidence to expose irregularities. Citizens can use such evidence to approach the media or appropriate legal authorities. He also stressed the importance of creating RTI awareness among students through schools, colleges and universities and encouraging greater public participation to strengthen the RTI movement.

The prize distribution ceremony for the RTI Quiz Competition was also held during the programme.
