New Delhi/Imphal: Showcasing its rich indigenous rice heritage on the national stage, Manipur won accolades on the second day of the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi.
Manipur was honoured with the prestigious Global Excellence Award for Best Award in GI Rice Category for best indigenous product presentation and innovation in value-added rice products.

The Department of Agriculture, Government of Manipur, led by Director Peter Salam, Director Agriculture, along with MOVCDNER Nodal Officer Kh. Nimaichand Singh, departmental team, entrepreneurs and Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) from the state, successfully displayed the state’s indigenous scented rice varieties and value-added products at the three-day conference, which concludes today, October 25.

Manipur’s stall was a major attraction, featuring its GI-tagged Chak-Hao (Black Scented Rice), Angouba (White Scented Rice) and a range of innovative value-added products including Instant Chak-Hao Kheer, Chak-Hao Cookies, Chak-Hao Gulla and Chak-Hao Bhujia.
A key highlight was the live culinary demonstration where a chef showcased Korean-style kimbaps and Japanese sushi rolls prepared using Chak-Hao and Angouba. During the exhibition, a free tasting of Chak-Hao Kheer was served to visitors, which received an overwhelming response.

The initiative aimed to explore new market opportunities in Delhi and other urban centres while promoting product innovation and stronger market linkages for farmers, FPOs and local entrepreneurs.
