Imphal, Manipur: As part of the build-up to the Imphal Chapter of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup, a Women’s Exhibition Football Match between Kangla Warriors and Sangai Strikers was organised at the SAI Ground, Imphal.
The event was graced by Shri Govindas Konthoujam, Hon’ble Minister for Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of Manipur, as the Chief Guest. He was joined by Maj Gen Shubhankar Basu, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division, and other civil and military dignitaries.
Serving as the curtain raiser to the Imphal Chapter, the event celebrated Manipur’s rich footballing legacy and honoured legendary women footballers of the state. On the occasion, 20 students from Super 50, Bishnupur, supported by the Indian Army in collaboration with the National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation (NIEDO) and the State Bank of India (SBI), were felicitated for their outstanding performance in the NEET and JEE examinations.
The programme featured a Pipe Band display, the Durand Cup anthem, and vibrant cultural performances. The Hon’ble Minister interacted with players of both teams before ceremonially kicking off the match.
After an enthralling contest that ended 0–0 in regulation time, Kangla Warriors emerged victorious 3–2 in the penalty shootout, delighting the crowd at SAI Ground. The iconic trophies of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup were also showcased to spectators.
During the prize distribution ceremony:
– Kangla Warriors received the Winning Shield, medals and a cash prize of Rs.50,000
– Sangai Strikers received the Runner-up Trophy, medals and a cash prize of Rs.40,000
The event served as a fitting curtain raiser to the Imphal Chapter, celebrating excellence in both sports and academics while reinforcing the spirit of Asia’s oldest football tournament.
The excitement now shifts to the Khuman Lampak Main Stadium, where the Imphal Chapter of the 135th IndianOil Durand Cup will commence with the Opening Ceremony, followed by the first fixture between TRAU FC and NEROCA FC.
